On Christmas Day, a family in Florida had their holiday saved by quick-thinking deputies and firefighters who formed a human chain to retrieve their presents from a water-filled ditch. The incident occurred when a mother was driving with her three young children on Interstate 95. At around 11:45 a.m., the vehicle veered off the highway, struck a pole, and rolled over before ending up in a ditch with approximately three feet of water, as reported by the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

Thankfully, bystanders came to the family's aid, helping them out of the car before first responders arrived at the scene. While the family only suffered minor injuries, their Christmas presents remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle. After being transported to a local hospital, deputies and Ormond Beach firefighters were determined to salvage the gifts. Using a ladder, they formed a human chain, passing the presents from the wreckage to dry land.

The efforts of the deputies and firefighters were crucial in ensuring that the family's Christmas was not entirely overshadowed by the accident. The gifts were then transported to the VSO office, where they were sorted, dried, and supplemented with additional donated gifts. The final step was bringing the presents to the hospital for the children, creating a brighter Christmas atmosphere for the family.
