Father and daughter found dead after car crash on way to grandmother's house

22:59 26.12.2023

A tragic incident occurred in Richland County, South Carolina, as a father and his six-year-old daughter lost their lives due to hypothermia. Jason Murph, 42, and his daughter Michelle were discovered by police K-9 dogs approximately 50 yards away from their wrecked and scorched pickup truck on December 18th. The victims' autopsies did not provide conclusive results, but the Calhoun County coroner determined that hypothermia was the cause of death based on the prevailing weather conditions.

Although the temperature was not below freezing, the combination of wind and rain made the situation extremely cold, prompting the desperate need for help and shelter. Coroner Donnie Porth explained to News19 that the father and daughter's bodies did not exhibit any suspicious injuries, and no foul play was suspected in their tragic demise.

According to the station WFAB, Murph and Michelle had embarked on a journey from Blythewood to visit the man's mother in Orangeburg, which was approximately 60 miles away. However, they never reached their destination, and on December 16th, they were reported missing. Murph's estranged wife informed the Richland County Sheriff's Department that around 8 o'clock that evening, he called her to inform her about the accident, disclosing that their vehicle had slid off the road. As cited by News19, an incident report revealed that Murph had no idea about his whereabouts during the call. The wife heard their daughter screaming in the background before the call abruptly ended. She attempted to contact Murph again, but received no response. In a desperate attempt to ensure their safety, she even texted him to call 911, but her efforts were in vain.

Surveillance footage from an Exxon gas station captured Murph's silver Toyota Tundra pickup truck just over an hour before his final call to his estranged wife. According to the county coroner, it appeared that Murph's truck had become stuck in the mud, leading him to make multiple unsuccessful attempts to free it. Unfortunately, the tire friction ignited a grass fire, prompting Murph and his daughter to exit the wrecked and burning vehicle in an effort to extinguish the flames. They then set out on foot to seek help, but tragically, they became trapped in the mud near a creek.

Coroner Donnie Porth surmised that while they were walking together, Murph's weight caused him to sink deeper into the mud, making it increasingly difficult to escape. Speaking to News19, he stated, "I feel like they were walking together, and unfortunately, he being heavier than she is, he sank into the mud, and the more you struggle, the deeper you go."

The devastating incident has left their family and friends in shock and mourning. Jason Murph's cousin, Quentin Murph, expressed confusion regarding how they ended up in that location, as it was not on the planned route to their destination. He deeply regretted not being there to assist them during their time of need and conveyed his love and fond memories of them. The family requested prayers and support during this challenging time.

This heart-wrenching tragedy serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by inclement weather conditions and the importance of taking appropriate measures to ensure personal safety when faced with unexpected circumstances.
