Pierce Brosnan in hot water for trespassing in Yellowstone thermal area

01:41 28.12.2023

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan has been cited for hiking off-trail in Yellowstone National Park, according to court documents obtained by CNN. The charges against the 70-year-old actor include foot travel in thermal areas and violating closures and use limits, which are listed as petty offenses. The incident occurred in November around the Mammoth Terraces area of the park.

Yellowstone National Park is known for its delicate and dangerous thermal areas, which have breakable crusts that can sit atop scalding water. The park's website advises visitors to use specific boardwalks and trails to navigate around these areas. Additionally, guests are warned to stay away from the water in the hot springs as it can cause severe or fatal burns.

In recent years, at least five people have been injured in Yellowstone's thermal areas. In August, a drunk man from Michigan was banned from the park after stumbling into a hot spring that was off-limits. In June, another visitor illegally stuck her hand into a scorching hot spring, and the incident was caught on video.

Brosnan was reportedly in the area filming parts of a Western titled "Unholy Trinity," in which he stars alongside Samuel L. Jackson. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming on January 23.

This is the first time Brosnan has had a run-in with the law. Last week, there was a viral tweet attempting to shame Brosnan's wife Keely Shaye Smith's appearance, but fans showed their support for the journalist and author's looks.

The Independent also reported on the citation, stating that Brosnan has been ordered to appear in court in January. The legal notice accuses him of straying off the path in Yellowstone National Park on November 1, 2023. In addition to foot travel in a thermal area, he is accused of violating closures and use limits. The Yellowstone Justice Center has set his court appearance for 11 am on January 23.

Yellowstone's thermal areas include geysers, hot springs, gas vents, and other fascinating phenomena that result from the park's location on top of a massive underground reserve of molten rock. The park, established as the first national park in the US, sits within a crater created by the Yellowstone Supervolcano around 600,000 years ago and contains approximately half of all known hydrothermal features in the world.

The National Park Service urges tourists to stay on boardwalks and trails to avoid becoming one of the 20 people who have died from burns after coming into contact with the hot springs. The service emphasizes that boardwalks and trails protect both visitors and the delicate thermal formations. The thin, breakable crust around hot springs is often underlain by scalding water.

Pierce Brosnan, born in Drogheda, Ireland in 1953, rose to fame with the British spy show Remington Steele in the 1980s before being cast as James Bond in 1995's "Goldeneye." The Independent has reached out to Brosnan's representatives for comment on the citation.
