Packers Coach Upset with Alexander's Coin Toss Blunder, Suspends Him

03:11 28.12.2023

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander found himself in hot water after a misstep during the coin toss before the Packers' game against the Carolina Panthers. Despite not being named a game captain, Alexander took it upon himself to join the coin toss. However, his decision to choose defense instead of deferring their choice to the second half could have allowed the Panthers to receive the kickoff at the start of each half. Fortunately, the referee clarified the rule to Alexander, avoiding any issues at the time.

The Packers announced on Wednesday that they were suspending Alexander for one game due to "conduct detrimental to the team." General manager Brian Gutekunst stated, "The decision to suspend a player is never easy and not one we take lightly. Unfortunately, Jaire's actions prior to the game in Carolina led us to take this step." Gutekunst expressed disappointment but also mentioned having a productive conversation with Alexander and expecting him to learn from the incident.

Head coach Matt LaFleur referred to Alexander's actions as a "big mistake" and emphasized the importance of reviewing game procedures with the players beforehand. LaFleur had even approached the officials before the game to ensure everyone was on the same page. Alexander, however, claimed he didn't realize he had done anything wrong, stating, "I said, 'I want our defense to be out there,' and they all looked at me like I was crazy." He later acknowledged that he should have said defer instead.

The incident occurred during Alexander's first game back since November 5, as he had been dealing with a shoulder injury. Perhaps wanting a proper homecoming in his hometown of Charlotte, Alexander took it upon himself to be a game captain. However, it seemed that LaFleur had not chosen him for that role. Despite the confusion, Alexander's return to the field was impactful, recording four tackles and forcing a fumble.

The Packers are currently the ninth seed in the NFC with a 7-8 record, and their chances of making the playoffs stand at 26%. A loss in their upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings would significantly decrease their playoff hopes to just 1%, while a win would raise it to 56%. Alexander will be absent for the Vikings game but will return for the season finale against the Chicago Bears.

Overall, Alexander's misstep during the coin toss could have had significant consequences for the Packers. However, the team managed to secure a narrow victory against the Panthers, keeping their slim postseason hopes alive.
