Quick-thinking student nurse saves man's life in car emergency

07:09 28.12.2023

A student nurse from the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Liverpool, England, is being hailed as a hero after she reportedly saved a man's life when he stopped breathing while driving his car. Demi Murphy, a three-year student nurse, was on her way back to work after lunch when she noticed a car in the middle of the road. Acting swiftly, she ran to the car and discovered that the driver, identified as John McKeown, was unresponsive and not breathing.

Without hesitation, Murphy jumped into action and began performing CPR on McKeown while he remained in the driver's seat. In a BBC interview, she recalled, "I didn't have time to think about it. I just jumped in the car and started doing CPR." Meanwhile, her friend who was on the phone with her called an ambulance for immediate assistance.

During the call, McKeown's partner, Vicky Flattery, also reached out to his phone, which Murphy answered. It was during this conversation that she learned about McKeown's genetic heart condition, as reported by the BBC. Despite the intense situation, the ambulance arrived quickly, and Murphy continued CPR on McKeown while the paramedics retrieved the defibrillator.

Eventually, McKeown regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital in the ambulance. However, his condition was critical, and he was put on life support in the intensive care unit. The 37-year-old experienced a seizure and was placed in an induced coma. It was later discovered that he had suffered a ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest.

Fortunately, McKeown underwent surgery to fit an implantable cardiac defibrillator, which would help regulate his irregular heartbeats. Miraculously, he was able to spend Christmas with his partner, Flattery, and their three children. Flattery expressed her gratitude, stating, "We're just really thankful that Demi was in the right place at the right time and all the other paramedics and hospital teams worked to save John, so he could come home to his children and his family."

David Melia, the chief nursing officer of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, commended Murphy for her quick thinking and life-saving actions. He stated, "Her quick thinking and life-saving actions mean John is here to enjoy Christmas with his family this year." Melia also expressed his confidence in Murphy's future, saying, "I have no doubt that Demi has a long and successful career ahead of her."

Fox News Digital reached out to the hospital for further comment on this remarkable Christmas miracle.
