Lauren Boebert switches districts, aims for GOP-friendly Colorado seat

14:26 28.12.2023

In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) announced on Wednesday that she will no longer be running for re-election in Colorado's 3rd District. Instead, she will be seeking office in the more Republican-friendly 4th District. Boebert, 37, made the announcement on Facebook, stating that she wants to represent the 3rd District well for the remainder of her term while working to earn the trust of grassroots conservative voters in the 4th District for the 2025 election.

Boebert's decision comes after a narrow victory in the 2022 election, where she won her race against Democrat Adam Frisch by just 546 votes. Frisch has since raised more than three times the amount of funds as Boebert over the last three months, indicating a potentially challenging race ahead. The 3rd District leans 9 percentage points in favor of Republicans, while the 4th District boasts a significant 27 percentage-point advantage for the GOP, according to an analysis of election results from 2016 to 2020.

One notable aspect of Boebert's decision is that she is not required to reside in the 4th District to represent it. This flexibility allows her to make this strategic move without having to uproot her life. In a video message posted on Facebook, Boebert expressed that this decision was not made lightly and involved a lot of prayer, tough conversations, and gaining perspective. She believes it is the best way for her to continue fighting for Colorado, the conservative movement, and her children's future.

Boebert referred to this announcement as a "fresh start" following a difficult year for her and her family. In May, she filed for divorce from her husband of 18 years, adding to the personal challenges she faced. In September, she was involved in a controversial incident during a theater performance of "Beetlejuice," where she was caught on camera vaping and engaging in inappropriate behavior with her date. Boebert and her date were subsequently kicked out of the theater, and she has since apologized multiple times for her actions.

Despite these personal setbacks, Boebert remains determined and grateful for the support she has received. She acknowledged her own mistakes and expressed gratitude for those who have stood by her in the 3rd District and across America. Boebert accused "Hollywood elites," "progressive money groups," "Aspen donors," and George Soros of attempting to "buy the 3rd District" congressional seat in 2024, further emphasizing her commitment to fighting against these influences.

As Boebert shifts her focus to the 4th District, the race for her current seat in the 3rd District is heating up. Several Republicans are lining up to run against her in the primary, while Frisch is once again vying for the congressional seat after his loss in 2022. Additionally, Colorado's current 4th District representative, Ken Buck, announced last month that he will not seek re-election in 2024, creating an open seat that Boebert intends to pursue.

Jerry Sonnenberg, a rancher and former Colorado state senator, has already announced his bid for the GOP nomination in the 4th District race. Sonnenberg has deep ties in the solidly Republican rural Colorado district, having served on the Colorado Farm Bureau board of directors and being elected to the state House and Senate. Four other Republicans and three Democrats have also declared their candidacy for Buck's seat, making for a competitive primary.

Overall, Boebert's decision to shift her focus to the 4th District has significant implications for Colorado's congressional landscape. As she navigates the challenges ahead, she remains committed to her conservative values and fighting against influential forces that she believes are trying to undermine her and the conservative movement. The 2024 elections will undoubtedly be closely watched, as both the 3rd and 4th District races unfold.
