Massive Migrant Caravan Approaches US Border as Blinken Calls for Mexican Assistance

19:55 28.12.2023

A massive migrant caravan consisting of approximately 8,000 individuals from Central and South America is making its way through southern Mexico towards the United States. This comes as Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other senior U.S. officials meet with Mexican officials, including President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, to address the ongoing surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. While Blinken referred to the situation as "irregular migration" and emphasized the importance of reducing it, the White House has downplayed the record-high levels of immigration, describing them as a seasonal surge.

In November alone, there were 242,418 migrant encounters at the southern border, making it the highest November on record and the third-highest month ever. The numbers have continued to rise, with over 35,000 migrant encounters during the four-day Christmas weekend and more than 250,000 since December 1st. This could potentially break the monthly record set in September of 269,735 encounters. Despite these alarming figures, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the increases are "not unusual" and attributed them to a broken immigration system that has been neglected for decades.

As the caravan progresses, it has passed through Mexico's main inland immigration inspection point near the town of Huixtla in southern Chiapas state. The group, consisting mostly of single adults but also including entire families, started their journey on Christmas Eve from the city of Tapachula, near the Guatemalan border. In the past, Mexico has allowed migrants to pass through their southern border, expecting them to tire themselves out along the way. However, in recent years, migrants have found alternative means of transportation, such as buses and trains, to reach the U.S. border.

The newly formed caravan primarily comprises individuals from Cuba, Haiti, and Honduras, seeking asylum in the United States. Tapachula, where the migrants initially gathered, is struggling to accommodate the large influx of people. Local officials have expressed concern that the town's resources are being stretched thin. A radical migrant-rights activist, Luis Rey Garcia Villagran, who is accompanying the group, warned that if they do not leave Tapachula, the town could collapse under the pressure.

With the number of migrants at the border continuing to rise, reaching over 2 million encounters in the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years, there is growing pressure on the White House to address the crisis. Mexican President Obrador has indicated a willingness to cooperate with U.S. officials on this issue and recently spoke with President Biden about illegal immigration ahead of Blinken's visit to Mexico.

While the White House has attempted to downplay the severity of the situation, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has criticized the administration, arguing that the influx of migrants poses a humanitarian crisis and weakens national security. As the caravan moves closer to the U.S. border, the attention on immigration policies and border security intensifies, placing the Biden administration under scrutiny.
