Pregnant Texas killer evades capture in Costa Rica, lawyers argue for leniency

00:40 29.12.2023

In a shocking revelation, it has been disclosed that Kaitlin Armstrong, the convicted killer of Anna Mo Wilson, was pregnant at the time of her arrest in Costa Rica. Armstrong's defense team has filed a bid for a new trial, arguing that her pregnancy should have been considered as a mitigating factor in her sentencing. The court filings, obtained by The Daily Mail, state that Armstrong has been pregnant twice, with one of the pregnancies occurring during or near the time of her arrest.

The case revolves around the murder of Anna Mo Wilson, a rising professional cyclist, who was shot dead by Armstrong in a fit of jealousy. Wilson had gone swimming and had dinner with Armstrong's then-boyfriend, Colin Strickland, which triggered Armstrong's rage. After tracking Wilson down in Austin, Armstrong shot her three times, including twice in the head and once through the heart. The murder sent shockwaves through the cycling community and prompted a 43-day international manhunt for Armstrong.

Armstrong's defense team is now attempting to present a more sympathetic portrayal of their client. They argue that Armstrong was a victim of sexual abuse and had a tumultuous upbringing, raised by an alcoholic mother and abandoned by her father. These arguments were not presented during Armstrong's trial but are now being introduced in the appeal.

However, the claim of Armstrong's pregnancy raises suspicions due to her decision to undergo plastic surgery while on the run in Costa Rica. Armstrong reportedly had a nose job and brow lift, both of which are typically not permitted for pregnant women. It is unclear how far along Armstrong was in her pregnancy or who the father could have been, as she and Strickland had a brief break-up before the murder.

Armstrong's attempts to evade law enforcement and escape justice have been persistent. She successfully orchestrated a daring prison escape in October, convincing guards to escort her to a private medical appointment by fabricating an illness. However, her escape was short-lived, as she was captured just minutes after fleeing.

The revelation of Armstrong's pregnancy during her arrest adds another layer of complexity to the case. Her defense team argues that this information should have been taken into consideration during her sentencing, potentially resulting in a more lenient punishment. It remains to be seen how the court will respond to these new developments and whether Armstrong will be granted a new trial.
