Trump brands Nikki Haley "Nikki New Taxes' as polling tightens

18:36 30.12.2023

In a fiery exchange of words, former President Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, launched a scathing attack on fellow Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley, labeling her as "Nikki New Taxes" in a missive titled "KISS OF DEATH: Nikki New Taxes." Cheung accused Haley of having a "troublesome record" and showing "total disdain for the working-class." He pointed out that Haley had broken her promise to voters by pushing for a 60% increase in the state gas tax in South Carolina and voting for a 20% increase in the state sales tax. Cheung further accused Haley of being an ally of lobbyist cronies and criticized her for taking advantage of impressionable politicians seeking their approval.

The animosity between Haley and Trump has been evident throughout the campaign trail, despite Haley serving as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Trump's administration. In a recent interview on ABC's "This Week," Haley expressed her frustration with the media's obsession with Trump, stating, "The thing is, normal people aren't obsessed with Trump like you guys are." She emphasized that ordinary people are more concerned about their financial struggles, the erosion of their freedoms, and the size of the government. While acknowledging her disagreements with Trump, Haley also mentioned having a good working relationship with him. However, she criticized his handling of national security and his failure to address issues like the flow of fentanyl into the country, which has resulted in numerous American deaths.

As the tension between the two candidates escalates, Trump's campaign team appears to be concerned about Haley's rising popularity. Recent polls have shown Haley gaining ground on Trump, with a survey in New Hampshire indicating she is within four points of the former president. This development is seen as a potential threat to Trump, who has otherwise dominated polls in every state thus far. In response, Trump's campaign committee unleashed the nickname "Nikki New Taxes" as a means to discredit Haley's candidacy. The email, signed by campaign spokesman Steven Cheung, not only attacked Haley's stance on taxes but also labeled her as a RINO (Republican in name only) for her support of entitlement reforms that allegedly undermine Medicare, Social Security, and increase the retirement age.

Trump's use of nicknames to belittle his opponents is not a new strategy. In previous campaigns, he famously referred to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as Low energy and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz as "Lyin Ted." During the 2020 race against President Biden, Trump repeatedly called him "Sleepy Joe." In the current presidential race, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been dubbed Ron DeSanctimonious by Trump.

Fox News Digital reached out to Haley's campaign team for a response but has yet to receive a reply. The ongoing feud between Trump and Haley continues to captivate the media and political observers, as both candidates strive to gain an advantage in the 2024 presidential race.
