DOJ torched after prosecutors announce Sam Bankman-Fried will not face trial on illegal political donations

01:00 31.12.2023

In a controversial decision that has sparked outrage among conservatives, federal prosecutors have announced that they will not proceed with a second trial against Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of FTX. The decision, which was revealed in a letter filed in federal court in Manhattan, cited the public interest in a speedy resolution of the case as the reason for not pursuing further charges against Bankman-Fried.

This news has left many conservatives frustrated, as they were hoping to see the FTX founder prosecuted to the fullest extent. Representative Tim Burchett from Tennessee expressed his disappointment, suggesting that the decision to avoid a second trial meant that the identities of the politicians who received bribes from Bankman-Fried would remain unknown. Burchett went on to claim that the "deep state" was breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Conservative commentator John Cardillo also criticized the Department of Justice (DOJ), accusing them of protecting Democrats who received donations from Bankman-Fried. He claimed that the DOJ's decision not to hold a second trial was a deliberate attempt to shield these politicians from being named as recipients of illicit funds. Cardillo's remarks were echoed by CryptoLaw founder John Deaton, who called the decision a disgrace and questioned the independence of the DOJ.

Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, commented on the high-profile nature of the case, suggesting that it had become too significant for the DOJ to ignore. He alleged that Bankman-Fried had laundered $100 million of customers' money to prominent figures such as Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden, and Mitch McConnell, as well as other undisclosed dark money groups. Kirk accused the DOJ of corruption, claiming that they had given themselves a "get out of jail free card."

Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, raised concerns about the use of stolen money for political bribes. He alleged that Bankman-Fried had donated $100 million during the 2022 midterms, with a significant portion going to dark money groups linked to Senate leaders like Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer. Rugg also shared a video clip showing Representative Maxine Waters blowing Bankman-Fried a kiss during one of their encounters.

According to Federal Election Commission filings, Bankman-Fried donated nearly $38 million to various candidates and PACs between 2021 and 2022. The majority of his contributions went to the Protect Our Future PAC, a group dedicated to supporting candidates committed to preventing future pandemics.

Bankman-Fried, who has been incarcerated since August on charges of stealing from FTX customers, was found guilty on seven federal charges earlier this month. His sentencing is scheduled for March 28. The charges against him include misappropriation of funds, embezzlement, and conspiracy.

Prosecutors defended their decision not to hold a second trial, stating that much of the evidence presented in the first trial would have been repeated. They also explained that the unlawful campaign contributions charge was not included in Bankman-Fried's extradition agreement with the Bahamas, where he was arrested.

The controversy surrounding this case has reignited debates about the independence of the DOJ and the potential influence of political donations on the justice system. As the sentencing date approaches, the public will be closely watching to see how the court handles the case and whether any further revelations come to light.
