Illinois Implements Laws Banning Semi-Automatic Weapons and Library Censorship

16:45 31.12.2023

Starting January 1, 2024, Illinois residents will need to navigate through 320 new state laws, some of which will have significant impacts on various aspects of their lives. One of the most notable changes is the ban on semi-automatic rifles, a law that has been in effect since 2019 but is still impacting tens of thousands of workers. The ban prohibits the sale, possession, or manufacture of automatic weapons, including specific brands or types of rifles and handguns. The law also sets limits on the number of rounds allowed for these firearms.

Another significant change is the prohibition of book bans in libraries that wish to receive state funds. Libraries must now adopt the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, which states that materials should not be excluded based on the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation. This law aims to combat the increasing attempts to censor books, especially those with LGBTQ+ themes or written by people of color.

In terms of employment, employers will now be required to offer paid vacation to their workers. Employees will accrue one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked, up to a total of 40 hours. Employers have the option to offer more than 40 hours, and employees can take time off after working for 90 days.

In an effort to address racial profiling, police will no longer be able to pull over motorists solely because of an object hanging from their rearview mirror. This law was approved after the tragic shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota in 2021, where he was pulled over for having a dangling air freshener and subsequently shot by an officer.

Other changes include the prohibition of videoconferencing while driving, the ban on indoor vaping in public spaces, restrictions on the use of license-plate reader technology on cars driven by women coming into Illinois for abortions, and the authorization of surveillance drones for law enforcement during special events. Additionally, victims of deepfake pornography will now have the ability to file civil lawsuits against anyone who shares or threatens to share digitally altered explicit images.

On a more inclusive note, businesses now have the option to install all-gender multi-occupancy restrooms. Current restrooms may also be renovated to accommodate all genders, with the requirement of floor-to-ceiling, locking dividers. This change aims to create a more inclusive environment for individuals of all gender identities.

Lastly, Illinois teenagers can now pre-register to vote at age 16 or 17 while obtaining a driver's license or state identification card. This allows them to be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, the legal voting age.

These new laws aim to address various social issues and improve the lives of Illinois residents. As the calendar turns to 2024, residents will need to familiarize themselves with these changes and navigate the new legal landscape.
