In a shocking incident over the weekend, a total of 49 people attending a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Monroe, Utah, were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident occurred at the small city's church, located approximately 174 miles south of Salt Lake City. The Sevier County Sheriff's Office revealed that emergency personnel initially responded to two medical calls on Sunday, which involved a four-year-old girl experiencing breathing problems and a man feeling sick. However, it was after a third call from a family complaining of headaches that the true extent of the situation was uncovered.

Upon inspection by the Monroe City Fire Department, elevated levels of carbon monoxide were detected within the church building, prompting the immediate evacuation of the premises. As the evening progressed, more people started reporting symptoms, leading to a total of 54 individuals reporting symptoms related to carbon monoxide poisoning. Out of these, 49 were treated for elevated levels of the poisonous gas. The exact source of the carbon monoxide poisoning has yet to be determined.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement addressing the incident, expressing their concern for the well-being of those affected. The statement attributed the incident to a malfunction in the building's heating system and assured the public that the meetinghouse would remain closed until its safety could be ensured. Additionally, the church stated that they were actively working to support the medical and other expenses incurred by the victims and their families.

The Sevier County Sheriff's Office, which initially reported 22 hospitalizations, stated that they did not have enough ambulances or personnel to treat all the patients. As a result, emergency medical workers and ambulances from nearby counties were called in to assist with the incident or remain on standby.

The gravity of the situation has left the community in shock and concern for the well-being of those affected. The conditions of the hospitalized individuals were not immediately available, leaving friends, family, and community members anxiously awaiting updates on their recovery. Meanwhile, authorities are diligently working to determine the exact cause of the carbon monoxide poisoning, ensuring that such a tragic incident does not occur again in the future.
