Washington survives Texas" wild, last-minute comeback try for dramatic CFP semifinal win

15:33 02.01.2024

In a thrilling Sugar Bowl matchup, the Washington Huskies emerged victorious with a 37-31 win over the Texas Longhorns. The game showcased the remarkable comeback story of Washington's quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., who passed for 430 yards and two touchdowns. This victory not only advances the Huskies to the College Football Playoff title game but also gives Penix, a sixth-year quarterback with two surgically repaired knees, and the beleaguered Pac-12 conference a chance to go out as champions.

With a 14-0 record, the second-ranked Huskies will face off against the top-ranked Michigan Wolverines next Monday night in Houston. Washington is seeking its first national championship since 1991 and the Pac-12's first since Southern California in 2004. This matchup between the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences marks the final season of the four-team playoff before expanding to 12 teams in 2024.

The game against Texas proved to be a nail-biter, with the Longhorns having four opportunities to score a touchdown in the final 15 seconds. However, Washington's defense held strong, with Quinn Ewers missing on the last three passes. The final throw, a fade to Adonai Mitchell, was knocked away by Washington's Elijah Jackson, sealing the Huskies' victory.

Washington coach Kalen DeBoer praised his team's resilience, stating, "Those guys are the most resilient guys I have ever been around." On the other side, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian commended his team's effort, acknowledging that they were just a second away from playing for a national championship.

For Penix, this victory is the culmination of a journey filled with adversity. After spending his first four college seasons at Indiana and suffering multiple season-ending injuries, Penix made the decision to transfer to Washington when his former offensive coordinator, DeBoer, took over as head coach. Penix's decision to return for a second year and take advantage of an extra year of eligibility has paid off, as he has emerged as a star and the Heisman Trophy runner-up this year.

Throughout the game, Penix displayed his talent and accuracy, going 29 for 38 with no turnovers. He completed 12 consecutive passes at one point, setting a record for the longest on-target streak in the College Football Playoff's history. Penix's connection with his talented receivers, Rome Odunze and Ja'Lynn Polk, proved to be crucial, with Odunze catching six passes for 125 yards and Polk catching five passes for 122 yards.

The game itself was a fitting representation of the last season before major changes in college football. Both Washington and Texas will be switching conferences next season, and both teams were led by star quarterbacks who transferred in. The first half was filled with excitement, including a 77-yard touchdown connection between Penix and Polk. The second quarter ended with a tie at 21-all.

In the second half, Washington took the lead with a touchdown pass from Penix to Jalen McMillen and two field goals by Grady Gross. Texas fought back, with Ewers finding Mitchell for a touchdown, making it a one-possession game. However, Penix remained composed and led Washington to another field goal, extending their lead to 37-28. Texas managed to kick a field goal with 1:09 left, cutting the lead to six. Although Washington recovered an onside kick, they were unable to run out the clock, giving Texas one last chance for an improbable comeback.

Despite the pressure, Washington's defense came through once again, preventing Texas from scoring a game-tying touchdown. Reflecting on his team's performance, Penix stated, "They've done it all year, coming up with big-time stops in big-time moments."

The victory over Texas showcased Washington's resilience and ability to win close games. The Huskies' last 10 victories have all been decided by 10 points or fewer, which has led to doubters questioning their abilities. However, defensive end Bralen Trice emphasized that they have always been disrespected and considered underdogs.

Looking ahead, Texas faces uncertainty regarding their quarterback situation. Will Ewers return for the Longhorns, or will it be time for Arch Manning to take the reins in Austin? On the other hand, Washington will prepare to face Michigan, a team they have a 5-8 all-time record against, including a 2-2 record in Rose Bowls.

The victory in the Sugar Bowl not only puts Washington in contention for a national championship but also solidifies their status as a football powerhouse. As they prepare for their final season in the Pac-12 before joining the Big Ten, the Huskies aim to leave a lasting legacy and bring home the ultimate prize in college football.
