'Wheel of Fortune' host Pat Sajak's embarrassing on-air fumble: "I messed up"

16:16 02.01.2024

In a recent episode of "Wheel of Fortune," longtime host Pat Sajak found himself in an awkward situation due to a cue-card mishap. As he introduced the contestants, Sajak stumbled upon Jason, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and mistakenly asked about his relationship status. "Married man?" Sajak inquired, leaving Jason visibly confused. After a momentary pause, Jason clarified that he was, in fact, single. Sajak quickly realized his error and laughed it off, admitting that he had messed up a card. Trying to lighten the mood, he jokingly asked if Jason was a circus acrobat before finally reading out the correct information about his bio, which revealed that he was a single dad from Paris, Texas, with two adopted boys.

This incident is just one of several awkward and embarrassing moments involving Sajak on "Wheel of Fortune" in recent times. Just last week, Sajak became testy with a contestant named Jill when she questioned a puzzle she couldn't solve, resulting in her losing out on a $40,000 prize. Jill, frustrated with her inability to solve the puzzle, asked Sajak, "What kind of puzzle is that?" Sajak fired back, "It's a puzzle you didn't solve," leading to a tense moment on the show. Sajak even remarked, "It's getting testy here on Christmas," highlighting the holiday snafu.

These incidents, however, are not isolated occurrences. Sajak has faced criticism for his behavior towards contestants in the past year or so. In May, he snapped at a contestant who struggled to answer a puzzle, asking them, "Why are you bothering?" He has also put a contestant in a chokehold, claimed he hides in Vanna White's garden, asked a contestant to remove his shirt, and even tugged on a contestant's beard. It seems that Sajak's quick wit and sometimes controversial remarks have become synonymous with the show.

Despite the recent controversies, Sajak's departure from "Wheel of Fortune" after 40 years has been known since June. The beloved host announced that he would be stepping down, making way for his successor, Ryan Seacrest, who will co-host the show alongside Vanna White in the upcoming season. Sajak's final episode is expected to air in June, marking the end of an era for the iconic game show.
