Intruder Fires Shots, Arrested at Colorado Supreme Court

21:17 02.01.2024

In a shocking incident, a 43-year-old man, identified as Brandon Olsen, was arrested early Tuesday after he opened fire and barricaded himself inside the Colorado Supreme Court building in Denver. The incident unfolded around 1:15 a.m. when Olsen was involved in a car crash outside the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center. He then aimed a handgun at the other driver before shooting his way into the building through a window.

Once inside, Olsen allegedly held an unarmed security guard at gunpoint and confiscated the officer's keys. He then made his way to the seventh floor, firing more shots and reportedly setting a fire that triggered the fire extinguishers. The Denver Police affidavit, which supported his arrest, stated that Olsen fired shots and set a fire on the seventh floor.

Authorities surrounded the building, and after a tense standoff, Olsen surrendered to law enforcement officials around 3 a.m. Fortunately, there were no injuries to building occupants, the suspect, or police personnel. However, the incident left a large shattered window on the ground floor of the building, with glass spilled out onto the sidewalk along a busy street downtown.

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) stated that they did not believe the incident was related to earlier threats against the court's seven justices. These threats came after the court ruled 4-3 on December 19, 2021, that former President Donald Trump was ineligible to appear on the state's March 5 primary ballot. The Centennial State justices determined that Trump's actions on January 6, 2021, ran afoul of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits those who "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" from holding office.

The ruling has been appealed, and Trump has been allowed to stay on the primary ballot unless the US Supreme Court intervenes before the printing of primary ballots later this week.

The break-in at the Colorado Supreme Court building has raised concerns about security. The CSP has increased security for the Supreme Court justices since their ruling but declined to provide specific details. It was mentioned that the security officers at the entrances to state buildings are unarmed but can call armed state patrol officers stationed nearby for help.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the suspect's motive remains unclear. The Denver Fire Department was called to the scene to control an active fire that was discovered inside the building. The judicial center, located at 2 East 14th Avenue, just off Civic Center Park in downtown Denver, was inspected for any damages caused by the gunshots or the fire.

As this is a developing story, further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
