NJ couple celebrates New Year's with twins born on separate days

13:02 03.01.2024

In a heartwarming and rare occurrence, a New Jersey couple celebrated the birth of their twin boys on different days and different years, just before and after the stroke of midnight on New Year's. Eve and Billy Humphrey, residents of Merchantville, welcomed their sons, Ezra and Ezekiel, at Virtua Voorhees Hospital in Voorhees. The couple's joy was amplified by the fact that Billy was celebrating his 36th birthday on the same day.

Eve, a 34-year-old biology professor, had initially gone to the hospital on Saturday but was sent home after a false alarm. However, the following day, her water broke, and she went into labor on Sunday night. The couple expressed their excitement about the possibility of having their boys on Billy's birthday. Billy shared his feelings, stating, "Having one of them at least on my birthday was a huge blessing and a gift."

The birth of the twins unfolded in a unique way. Ezra, weighing 6 pounds, made his entrance into the world at 11:48 p.m. on December 31, 2023, while his fraternal twin brother, Ezekiel, weighing 4 pounds and 15 ounces, arrived 40 minutes later at 12:28 a.m. on January 1, 2024. This meant that not only were the boys born on different days, but they also entered the world in different years.

Eve described the experience as incredible, as she pushed out a baby while everyone around her was counting down and celebrating the New Year. She expressed gratitude that both she and the babies were healthy, especially considering the twins were born a few weeks early. The couple was overjoyed that the twins were doing well and had different personalities from the start. While Ezra appeared calm, Ezekiel exhibited more energy.

The Humphreys, who were initially taken aback when they discovered they were expecting twins, are now looking forward to the future. Billy, a pastor, admitted that it was challenging to take in the news at first, but he is excited about sharing birthdays and celebrating together as a family. The twins will join their older brother, Hezekiah, who coincidentally will be turning three on January 1.

The couple expressed their optimism about being discharged from the hospital as early as Tuesday. They eagerly anticipate bringing their newborns home and embarking on this new chapter of their lives. However, Billy did acknowledge that paperwork might pose a challenge in the future, with the boys having different birthdays and birth years. He humorously shared his concerns, stating, "Tell somebody you have twins, and they want to write down the same date. No, they're born on different days in different years too."

This incredible story of the Humphrey family's double joy and the unique circumstances surrounding the birth of their twin boys has captured the hearts of many. The parents are grateful for the blessings they have received and are excited to create lasting memories as they navigate the joys and challenges of raising their growing family.
