Plastic Surgeon's Alleged Drunken Operation Leaves Woman Feeling Like 'Frankenstein'

15:10 03.01.2024

A plastic surgeon in Arizona, Dr. Bradley Becker, is facing a lawsuit from a former patient who alleges that he botched her procedure while under the influence of alcohol. The patient, Wendy Ellsworth, spoke to Phoenix New Times about her distressing experience. Dr. Becker, who is described as a "Double Board Certified-Plastic Reconstructive surgeon specializing in Breast and Body," has been practicing in Arizona for 21 years, according to his Instagram bio.

Ellsworth underwent a tummy tuck and breast reduction with Dr. Becker, but she claims that she noticed something was amiss even before the procedure began. She said that she thought she smelled alcohol on Dr. Becker when he came to see her before the operation. Despite her concerns, Ellsworth proceeded with the surgery, fearing that she would not be able to get her money back if she backed out. Little did she know that her worries would be confirmed when she saw the results.

According to the lawsuit filed by Ellsworth in Maricopa County Superior Court, she accuses Dr. Becker of "medical negligence," "battery," and "intentional infliction of emotional distress." She claims that there was extra skin sagging off her body after the surgery, which she believed should have been removed. This left her feeling like Frankenstein and caused her to avoid social gatherings and dress in tight undergarments to conceal the excess skin.

The original procedure cost Ellsworth $16,000, but she had to pay an additional $25,000 for a corrective procedure with another surgeon. To afford the corrective procedure, her husband took on a second job, working long hours. The emotional toll of the botched surgery also took a toll on their marriage, as Ellsworth developed debilitating depression.

In a letter to the osteopathic board in Arizona, Tyler Ellsworth, Wendy's husband, wrote, "Becker destroyed my wife. He destroyed who she was... His cuts went deeper than just removing skin from her stomach and breasts and quite literally scarring her for life." The couple's life was turned upside down, with Wendy suffering from severe depression and anguish that was indescribable.

Dr. Becker denies the allegations that he was under the influence of alcohol during the surgery. In his response to the original complaint, he also stated that the procedure was in line with the standard of care. However, this is not the first time Dr. Becker has faced such accusations. Another patient, Alicia Armijo, filed a lawsuit in October with similar allegations. Armijo claimed that Dr. Becker was under the influence of alcohol during her surgery as well. She suffered from extreme emotional distress and stated that she would need a corrective procedure costing $12,000.

When contacted for comment, Dr. Becker's attorney declined to speak on pending litigation and stated that they would "try this case in the courtroom, not the press." It remains to be seen how these lawsuits will unfold and what the outcome will be for Dr. Becker and his patients who have suffered both physically and emotionally.
