Imam Dies in Shooting Outside New Jersey Mosque, Motive Unclear

01:49 04.01.2024

Imam Hassan Sharif, a respected figure in the Muslim community, was fatally shot multiple times outside the Masjid Muhammad-Newark mosque in Newark, New Jersey on Wednesday. Despite initial concerns, authorities have stated that the shooting does not appear to be motivated by bias or related to terrorism. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made thus far.

During a news conference, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II emphasized that there is no evidence suggesting a bias crime. However, investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the shooting. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin echoed this sentiment, stating that while the evidence collected so far does not point to bias, they are still uncertain about what motivated the attack.

In response to the incident, authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information and have requested video surveillance from the area. Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka expressed solidarity with Imam Sharif's family and the community, emphasizing the imam's dedication to the city and his efforts to promote peace and combat violence.

The shooting comes at a time when there have been increasing reports of threats, violence, and hate speech against Muslim and Jewish Americans since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October. This rise in incidents has heightened fear and anxiety within the Muslim community. In light of this, New Jersey authorities have already increased security measures around mosques and other places of worship statewide.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also sought to reassure the Muslim community, stating that law enforcement will provide updates as they become available. Imam Sharif was known for his activism against gun violence and was highly regarded for his leadership within the community. He had been the resident imam of Masjid Muhammad-Newark for about five years and was involved in interfaith efforts in Newark.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) described Imam Sharif as a "beacon of leadership and excellence" and advised all mosques to remain cautious and keep their doors open despite the recent spike in anti-Muslim bigotry.

In addition to his role at the mosque, Imam Sharif had been working as a transportation security officer at Newark Liberty International Airport since 2006. The Transportation Security Administration expressed their deep sadness at his passing and extended their condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
