11:54 04.01.2024

Multiple people have been injured in a shooting incident at Perry High School near Des Moines, Iowa. The shooting took place on Thursday morning, and authorities responded within seven minutes of receiving a call about an active shooter on campus. Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante confirmed that the shooter has been identified but did not provide any further details. It is unclear at this time if there have been any fatalities.

Law enforcement and medical personnel are currently at the scene, and the site has been secured, according to a post on the Dallas County Facebook page. The Dallas County Sheriff's Office is expected to release more information as it becomes available. The Iowa State Patrol is also responding to the incident, and police vehicles from multiple cities are present outside the high school.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have confirmed that their agents have been deployed to assist the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is leading the investigation. The White House is aware of the situation and is monitoring reports of the shooting.

Perry, Iowa, where the high school is located, is a small town about 40 miles northwest of Des Moines with a population of approximately 8,000 residents. The Perry Community School District, which includes the high school, a middle school, and an elementary school, serves around 1,800 students. Today was supposed to be the first day of classes for the new semester.

Classes at Perry High School have been canceled for the day in response to the shooting. This incident adds to the alarming number of school shootings that occurred in the United States last year, with more than 80 incidents reported, the highest since 2008.

The situation is still developing, and more information is expected to be released during a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. local time.
