Florida woman claims divine direction in shooting spree on interstate

09:21 09.04.2024

A 22-year-old Georgia woman, Taylon Nichelle Celestine, was arrested on Monday after allegedly shooting two drivers on Interstate 10 in Florida. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Celestine had checked out of a hotel and told staff that she was going on a shooting spree directed by God in relation to the solar eclipse that day. She entered the highway in Bonifay, Florida, and within five miles, she fired into a passing car, shattering windows and grazing the driver in the arm. She then shot at a second vehicle, hitting the driver in the neck. The injured driver was treated at a hospital.

Celestine was driving a purple Dodge Challenger with Georgia plates and was found with an AR-15 rifle and 9mm handgun when she was stopped by troopers after driving about 16 miles. She was arrested and booked into the Holmes County jail on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and improper discharge of a firearm. It is unclear if she has legal representation at this time.

The incident occurred near Bonifay, about 50 miles north of Panama City, as millions of people across the U.S. watched the solar eclipse. Although Florida was not in the path of totality, experts had warned of a potential uptick in car crashes during the rare event. Research from a previous total solar eclipse in 2017 showed an increase in deadly car crashes during the phenomenon. It is unknown if any fatal crashes on Monday were related to the eclipse.
