Wayne LaPierre steps down as NRA leader before corruption trial

15:27 05.01.2024

In a shocking turn of events, Wayne LaPierre, the longtime leader of the National Rifle Association (NRA), has announced his resignation from the organization. LaPierre, who has served as the CEO and executive vice president of the NRA since 1991, made the announcement just days before his civil trial is set to begin in New York.

The decision to step down comes as LaPierre faces a legal battle with New York Attorney General Letitia James, who filed a lawsuit in 2020 seeking to dissolve the NRA. James has accused LaPierre and other top officials of the organization of diverting millions of dollars for their personal use, alleging financial improprieties and tax fraud.

In a statement released by the NRA, LaPierre expressed pride in the organization's accomplishments and his unwavering support for the Second Amendment. He stated, "With pride in all that we have accomplished, I am announcing my resignation from the NRA. I've been a card-carrying member of this organization for most of my adult life, and I will never stop supporting the NRA and its fight to defend Second Amendment freedom. My passion for our cause burns as deeply as ever."

The timing of LaPierre's resignation is particularly significant, as it comes just three days before the start of his civil corruption trial. Jury selection has already begun, and the trial is expected to be a high-profile legal showdown. The lawsuit alleges that LaPierre "routinely abused his authority" to fund personal trips on yachts, private jets, and luxury cars, as well as lavish gifts for friends, employees, and vendors.

The NRA, in a press release, stated that it will continue to defend itself against the allegations brought forth by James. The organization claimed that it is well-known that James had vowed to pursue the NRA when she was a candidate for office. Andrew Arulanandam, an executive and head of general operations at the NRA, will serve as the interim CEO and executive vice president.

This breaking news story is still developing, and further updates are expected as the trial progresses. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for the future of the NRA and the gun rights advocacy movement as a whole.
