Nevada Judge Attacked: Defendant Faces New Charges After Attempted Murder

20:27 05.01.2024

In a shocking incident that unfolded earlier this week, a convicted felon launched a violent attack on a female judge in a Las Vegas courtroom. Debora Redden, a 30-year-old three-time felon, was appearing before Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus for sentencing on a conviction for attempted battery with substantial bodily harm.

Redden's attorney had pleaded for parole, but Judge Holthus, taking into account his violent past and repeated arrests, decided to sentence him to jail time. It was at this moment that chaos erupted in the courtroom. Redden, refusing to face the new felony charges, hurled himself over the courtroom dais and launched a vicious attack on Judge Holthus.

The 62-year-old judge was knocked off her seat as Redden rushed towards her with the intention to kill. It took several minutes for court officials and law enforcement to subdue the assailant and pull him away from the courtroom. According to court documents viewed by KLAS, Redden blamed his outburst on having a "bad day" and claimed that Judge Holthus had it out for him, describing her as "evil."

While being detained, Redden apologized to the officers for his violent outburst, expressing remorse for their witnessing such an alarming incident. However, the chaos did not end there. Inside the courthouse, Redden allegedly spat in a corrections officer's face, further escalating the already tense situation.

The attack left both Judge Holthus and her marshal, Shane Brandon, injured. Holthus' head was slammed against the wall during the struggle, and she later reported feeling sore and stiff. Brandon suffered a gash on his face that required 25 stitches. Additionally, law clerk Michael Lasso sustained minor hand abrasions during the altercation.

Clark County Chief Judge Jerry Wiese expressed relief that the incident did not result in more severe injuries. Holthus received immediate medical attention at the justice center and was later taken to a hospital by a family member due to continued pain. Fortunately, she was released after receiving treatment.

Wiese emphasized that this attack was a rare occurrence within a courthouse, which is typically considered a safe space. The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place to protect judges and court officials. Authorities are now reviewing the incident to determine if any additional precautions need to be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As for Redden, he now faces new felony charges related to the attack on Judge Holthus. It remains to be seen how the court will handle his case, considering the severity of his actions. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by those working within the criminal justice system and the need for enhanced security measures to ensure their safety.
