Vatican finds former Minnesota archbishop imprudent, but not criminal

16:54 06.01.2024

In a recent announcement, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis revealed that the Vatican's investigation into former Archbishop John Nienstedt has concluded. Nienstedt had resigned from his position eight years ago amid allegations of covering up crimes committed by a pedophile priest within the church. The current Archbishop Bernard Hebda, who assumed the role in 2015, released a statement on Friday regarding the investigation's findings.

According to Hebda, the Vatican investigation did not support the allegations against Nienstedt, deeming them unfounded. However, the investigation did reveal instances of imprudent actions by Nienstedt. Despite not warranting further investigation or penal sanctions, Pope Francis decided to impose several administrative actions on Nienstedt. These actions include prohibiting him from practicing ministry or residing in the Province of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, which encompasses Minnesota and the Dakotas. Furthermore, Nienstedt will require express authorization from the attending Ordinary and notification to the Dicastery for Bishops to exercise ministry outside of his diocese of residence.

The announcement has been met with mixed reactions. Mike McDonnell, the executive director of SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests), expressed disappointment, stating that the release of information from the Vatican is a "slap in the face to victims." He believes that the announcement diminishes the pain experienced by survivors and raises more questions than answers.

Jennifer Haselberger, a whistleblower, also voiced frustration with the lack of transparency in the investigation. She highlighted the need for clarity regarding the imprudent actions attributed to Nienstedt, especially considering the severity of the allegations against him. Haselberger emphasized the importance of providing information to both Nienstedt and the individuals involved in making the accusations.

McDonnell criticized the Catholic Church's handling of such cases, stating that it follows a pattern of moving individuals like Nienstedt out of sight and hoping the issue will fade away. However, he believes that this approach fails to address the harm caused and perpetuates a culture of corruption within the church.

In response to the announcement, Nienstedt released a statement affirming his full cooperation with the investigations and his commitment to answering all questions truthfully. He expressed his willingness to follow the direction given by the Holy Father and acknowledged the pain experienced by those affected by the allegations against him.

Haselberger urged the church to focus on improving its systems and holding those in authority accountable to create a safer environment. She emphasized the need to keep all individuals impacted by these events in mind and to continue pressuring the church for change.

The lengthy Vatican investigation into Archbishop John Nienstedt's alleged misconduct has brought some clarity to the situation. While the investigation did not find evidence of violations of church law, it did uncover instances of imprudent actions by Nienstedt. Consequently, Pope Francis has imposed several administrative actions on Nienstedt, including restrictions on his ministry and residence.

However, the announcement has raised concerns among survivors' groups and whistleblowers. They argue that the lack of transparency and failure to provide specific details about the imprudent actions leave many questions unanswered. They believe that the Catholic Church's handling of these cases perpetuates a culture of corruption and fails to adequately address the harm caused to survivors.

As the controversy surrounding Nienstedt's case continues, it remains to be seen how the Catholic Church will respond to the calls for greater transparency and accountability.
