Investor's Wife Accused of Plagiarism Amid Push for Harvard President's Exit

17:36 06.01.2024

Prominent architect and designer Neri Oxman, wife of billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, is facing allegations of plagiarism in her academic work. The accusations came to light after Business Insider reported instances of Oxman lifting sentences from other researchers without proper citation and neglecting to attribute sources in her 2010 dissertation. Oxman admitted to the errors and apologized, stating that she had properly credited the original sources but failed to use quotation marks. However, Business Insider also discovered 28 additional examples of plagiarism in her work, including passages allegedly taken verbatim from Wikipedia. These allegations come in the midst of a larger controversy surrounding plagiarism at Harvard University, where Ackman had campaigned for the resignation of former president Claudine Gay due to similar accusations. Gay had also faced criticism for her handling of antisemitism on campus. Ackman launched a scathing attack on Harvard's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative, accusing the university of downplaying the seriousness of plagiarism and damaging its academic standards and credibility. He questioned the validity of the allegations against Oxman, highlighting the dynamic nature of Wikipedia and the lack of copyright protection. Ackman pledged to conduct a plagiarism review of all current MIT faculty members, MIT President Sally Kornbluth, and the university's governing body, promising to share the results with the public. He also expressed his intention to review the work of reporters at Business Insider. MIT declined to comment on the allegations against Oxman, stating that they remain focused on their essential work. The weaponization of plagiarism has raised concerns among experts, who fear that minor issues could be blown out of proportion or false accusations may be made. The accusations against Oxman came shortly after Gay's resignation, leading to speculation about the use of plagiarism as a weapon in the ongoing battle for leadership and direction at elite universities. Oxman, a former tenured professor at MIT's Media Lab, is known for her work in material ecology and has been portrayed as a brilliant and quirky scholar. She apologized for her errors and omissions in citation, acknowledging the importance of crediting her peers and those who came before her. The controversy surrounding Oxman and Gay highlights the increasing polarization and weaponization of various issues in academia and society as a whole.
