Nevada man charged with attempted murder after shocking courtroom attack

07:33 10.01.2024

In a shocking turn of events, the convicted felon who made headlines last week for lunging at a Las Vegas judge superman style appeared in court again on Tuesday to face an attempted murder charge. Deobra Redden, 30, was surrounded by guards and wore a mask covering his mouth and orange mitts over his hands as he stood before a different judge to face charges over the courtroom chaos that unfolded last Wednesday.

According to KVVU, Redden was charged with attempted murder against an older person, battery, intimidating a public officer with threat of force, extortion, and disregarding the safety of a person resulting in substantial bodily harm. The criminal complaint obtained by CNN outlines the horrifying details of the attack. Redden allegedly pulled Judge Mary Kay Holthus' hair, wrapped his hands around her throat, and hit her on the head. The complaint further states that Redden battled a Las Vegas cop, a clerk, and a marshal, and even spat on an officer during the violent outburst.

Prior to Tuesday's hearing, Redden was sentenced to 19-48 months in prison for a past baseball bat assault. During this hearing, Redden's family revealed that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Court records indicate that he was deemed competent to stand trial, but his family believes that his actions were a result of a chemical imbalance rather than malicious intent. "No disrespect. We're not denying what he did," said foster mother Karen Springer. "It's a chemical imbalance," added his sister LaDonna Daniels. They expressed concern that sending him to prison would not be the appropriate solution.

In a separate report, it was revealed that Redden has been charged with attempted murder, battery on a protected person, extortion by threat, and intimidating a public officer. The attack on Judge Holthus was captured on courtroom security video and widely circulated. The arrest report states that Redden vaulted over a defense table, dove across the judge's bench, and landed on top of Holthus, slamming her head against a wall and pulling out her hair. The judge sought medical treatment on site and later went to the hospital for further evaluation.

Despite the traumatic incident, Judge Holthus returned to her courtroom the day after the attack and completed the sentencing for Redden's unrelated baseball bat assault case. Chief Judge Jerry Wiese described Redden's action as "Supermanning over a judicial bench" and called it unprecedented behavior. The courtroom marshal, Shane Brandon, dislocated his shoulder and sustained a face laceration while trying to subdue Redden.

Redden's attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and it is unclear who will represent him in the new charges. During the original hearing, Redden's attorney had asked for leniency, stating that his client was turning his life around with a new job and plans to continue his education. However, Judge Holthus read out Redden's extensive criminal history, which included felonies, misdemeanors, domestic violence incidents, robberies, and attempted home invasion. The judge believed that Redden needed to "get a taste of something else" due to his history, which prompted his violent outburst.

The courtroom video shows Redden shouting expletives before tackling Judge Holthus to the ground. As chaos ensued, Redden continued to scream and throw punches. The judge remained on the ground for several minutes before standing up, visibly injured. Despite the ordeal, Judge Holthus returned to work the following day but reported feeling sore and stiff.

Redden's preliminary hearing on the new charges is set for February 14. The case has sparked discussions about mental health and the appropriate response to individuals with mental illnesses in the criminal justice system. As the trial progresses, the court will need to determine the appropriate course of action for Redden, taking into consideration his diagnosed conditions and the safety of all involved.
