Winter Storm Forces Postponement of Bills-Steelers Game

22:35 13.01.2024

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Saturday that the highly anticipated playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers will be rescheduled due to a wild winter storm hitting the region. The game, originally scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m., will now take place on Monday at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Governor Hochul took to Twitter to inform the public about the decision, stating, "I've been in communication with @NFL commissioner Roger Goodell regarding the dangerous conditions in Buffalo this weekend. In consultation with our emergency response teams, @BuffaloBills leadership, and the NFL, the Bills game will be postponed to 4:30 pm Monday."

The decision to reschedule the game was made in the best interest of public safety as the region braces for heavy snowfall and strong winds. Erie County, where the Bills' Highmark Stadium is located, is currently under a Winter Storm Warning until Monday. The area is expected to receive between 1 to 3 feet of lake-effect snow, creating whiteout conditions that make driving extremely hazardous.

This marks the first time in seven years that the NFL has been forced to reschedule a playoff game due to inclement weather. In 2016, a divisional playoff game between the Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City was delayed due to an ice storm.

The Buffalo Bills had urged their fans to assist in preparing Highmark Stadium for the game, offering $20 per hour to anyone over the age of 18. However, with the storm intensifying, it became evident that playing in such treacherous conditions would pose a significant risk to the players and fans.

The Steelers vs. Bills matchup is not the only game affected by the winter storm. The wild-card matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins in Kansas City is expected to be one of the coldest in NFL history. Temperatures could dip as low as -8 degrees Fahrenheit, with windchills making it feel as low as -35 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additionally, the Green Bay Packers vs. Dallas Cowboys game in Texas is facing freezing temperatures, snow, rain, and strong winds. Despite the challenging weather conditions, thousands of dedicated football fans are braving the elements to support their favorite teams.

As the storm continues to wreak havoc on the region, Governor Hochul also announced a full travel ban in Erie County starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday night. The ban aims to ensure the safety of residents and prevent unnecessary accidents on the roads.

If the Steelers emerge victorious on Monday, they will advance to face their rival, the Baltimore Ravens, who hold the top seed in the AFC. The outcome of this rescheduled game will have significant implications for both teams' playoff journeys.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
