US conducts fourth round of strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen

14:46 21.01.2024

In a series of targeted strikes, American forces have once again launched an attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen. This marks the fourth time in less than a week that the US has targeted the rebel group. The latest strikes were aimed at 14 Houthi missiles that were loaded and ready to be fired from Yemen. According to US Central Command, these missiles posed an imminent threat to merchant vessels and American Navy ships in the region. The statement from the command explained that the strikes were necessary to exercise their right and obligation to defend themselves against potential attacks.

The US has been increasingly concerned about the Houthi militia's attacks on ships in the region, which have not only slowed down trade between Asia and Europe but have also alarmed major powers. The targeted strikes are intended to degrade the Houthis' ability to carry out further attacks in the Red Sea. The Houthis, who control most of Yemen, claim to be acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and have even threatened to expand their attacks.

Earlier on the same day, US Central Command reported that a drone launched from an area controlled by the Houthi rebels had struck a US-owned vessel in the Gulf of Aden. Although there was some damage, no injuries were reported. The vessel in question, the M/V Genco Picardy, is a Marshall Islands-flagged, US-operated bulk carrier ship. These incidents have further heightened tensions in the region.

In response to the escalating situation, the White House has officially designated the Yemen-based Houthi rebels as a terrorist group. This move is aimed at severing violent extremist groups from their sources of financing. The US has also warned Iran, who is believed to support the Houthis, to cease providing weapons to the rebel group.

Despite the sanctions and military strikes, the Houthis have continued their campaign of harassment against commercial and military ships. The latest incident occurred when a one-way attack drone launched from a Houthi-controlled area struck the US-owned and operated M/V Genco Picardy in the Gulf of Aden. The US has vowed to continue taking military action to prevent further attacks.

The Pentagon has emphasized the importance of working with regional partners to deter and prevent attacks on ships from over 50 countries around the world. The US has already conducted large-scale operations in collaboration with British warships and warplanes, hitting over 60 targets across Yemen. However, the Houthis have shown resilience and have managed to carry out retaliatory strikes, including firing an anti-ship cruise missile towards a US Navy destroyer. The US successfully shot down the missile, but the attacks continue to pose a significant threat.

The ongoing conflict in the region has raised concerns about the potential for a wider conflict. The Biden administration has been working to prevent the Israel-Hamas war from spreading, but attacks by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, along with the Houthi attacks on commercial ships, have added to the instability. The US remains committed to protecting its interests and ensuring the safety of its forces and allies in the region.
