Coast Guard rescues 20 stranded on Lake Erie ice floe

10:13 23.01.2024

In a daring rescue operation, twenty people who found themselves stranded on an ice floe on Lake Erie in Ohio have safely returned to shore, according to the US Coast Guard. The incident occurred near Catawba Island State Park, a popular recreational site known for boating, fishing, and water activities. The Coast Guard was alerted to the situation at 10:21 am on Monday and immediately dispatched a helicopter, two airboats, and local authorities to the scene.

The stranded group, half a mile from the shore, faced chilly temperatures with the wind chill factor making it feel even colder. The National Weather Service reported that the temperature at Toledo Executive Airport, near Lake Erie, was a bone-chilling 21 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the freezing conditions, all twenty individuals were able to make it back to land unharmed.

The rescue operation was a joint effort between the Coast Guard crews from Station Marblehead and Air Station Detroit, as well as the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. The Coast Guard rescued nine people from the ice floe, while the Put-in-Bay Fire Department successfully rescued four individuals. Seven people were fortunate enough to repair their airboat and safely return to land.

Lt. Adeeb Ahmad, the Sector Detroit Public Affairs Officer, emphasized the importance of exercising caution around ice formations. He warned that ice floes can be unpredictable and dangerous, especially in windy conditions or areas with strong currents. Ahmad urged people to always check local ice conditions before venturing out and to be prepared for any emergencies.

Lake Erie, the smallest of the Great Lakes, is known for its freezing temperatures in the winter months due to its shallow depth. With an average depth of only 62 feet, the lake frequently freezes over, making it a popular destination for ice-related activities. However, incidents like these highlight the need for caution and preparedness.

This is not the first time the Coast Guard has been called out to Lake Erie for ice-related incidents. In 2022, eighteen people were stranded on an ice floe while snowmobiling. These incidents serve as a reminder of the potential dangers that come with venturing onto frozen bodies of water.

Despite the challenges posed by the icy conditions, the successful rescue operation serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Coast Guard and local authorities. Their swift response and coordinated efforts ensured the safe return of all twenty individuals involved in this harrowing ordeal.
