Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson suspended 25 games for drug violation

15:55 23.01.2024

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson has been suspended for 25 games without pay by the NBA after violating the league's anti-drug program. The suspension comes after Thompson tested positive for the growth hormone stimulator Ibutamoren and muscle enhancer SARM LGD-4033, both of which are substances banned by the NBA. The league made the announcement on Tuesday, stating that Thompson's suspension will begin on Wednesday when the Cavaliers play the Milwaukee Bucks.

Thompson, who is 32 years old and was born in Brampton, Ontario, has had a successful basketball career. He moved to the U.S. on a student visa to attend high school, which helped launch his basketball career. He then joined the basketball team at the University of Texas before declaring for the NBA draft in 2011. He was selected as the fourth overall pick and has since played for various teams including the Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers before returning to Cleveland in 2023. He won an NBA championship with the Cavaliers in 2016.

Aside from his basketball career, Thompson is also known for his high-profile relationship with reality television star Khloe Kardashian. The couple dated for several years and share two children together, a 5-year-old daughter named True Thompson and a 1-year-old son named Tatum Thompson. However, their relationship ended due to cheating allegations, which became a storyline on the reality show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." In a November episode of the show, Thompson apologized for his actions and expressed regret for the drama he caused within the family.

Thompson's suspension is expected to extend into mid-March, and he will not be in uniform for the Cavaliers' upcoming game against the Milwaukee Bucks. The NBA's decision to suspend Thompson without pay reflects the seriousness of violating the league's anti-drug program. The substances he tested positive for, Ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033, are known to be performance-enhancing drugs that can artificially improve strength, build muscle, and speed up recovery. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that these drugs can be used to build lean muscle mass and bulk up body mass.

Representatives for Thompson and the Cavaliers have not yet commented on the suspension. CBS News reached out to Thompson for comment, but there has been no response as of now. It remains to be seen how this suspension will impact Thompson's future with the Cavaliers and his overall basketball career.
