US Troops Killed and Injured in Iran-Backed Drone Attack in Jordan

13:12 28.01.2024

In a tragic incident, three American service members were killed and 25 others were injured in an unmanned aerial drone attack on a base in Jordan. President Joe Biden and the U.S. military have attributed the attack to radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq. The attack took place at a base in northeast Jordan, close to the border with Syria.

Central Command, which oversees forces in the Middle East, confirmed that 25 individuals were wounded in the attack. The identities of those killed will be withheld for 24 hours to allow their families to be notified. This attack comes at a time when tensions between the U.S. and Iran's proxies in the region have reached new heights in recent weeks.

The escalation began when Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels started targeting shipping vessels in the Red Sea in October, as a protest against Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza. In response, the U.S. and its allies began conducting airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. On Friday, the militants launched a missile at the USS Carney, marking the first time the Houthis had targeted a U.S. warship. Fortunately, the missile was successfully shot down by the destroyer, and no injuries were reported.

Prior to this, the U.S. military had reported the loss of two Navy SEALs at sea. They went overboard while attempting to board an Iranian vessel that was delivering advanced conventional weapons to the Houthi rebels. President Biden condemned Sunday's attack in Jordan as "despicable and wholly unjust," vowing to hold all those responsible accountable at a time and in a manner of their choosing.

President Biden emphasized that the U.S. remains committed to fighting terrorism and will continue their efforts despite this tragic incident. The attack in Jordan marks the first time American troops stationed in Jordan have been targeted during the ongoing conflict. Jordan, a close ally of the U.S., has long served as a basing point for American troops, with approximately 3,000 stationed there.

As the facts surrounding the attack are still being gathered, President Biden was briefed on the situation by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, national security adviser Jake Sullivan, and principal deputy national security adviser Jon Finer. The president made it clear that these service members represented the best of the nation, displaying unwavering bravery, duty, and commitment to the safety of their fellow Americans and allies in the fight against terrorism.

This attack serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by American forces in the Middle East and the ongoing threat posed by Iran-backed militant groups. The U.S. government will undoubtedly intensify its efforts to combat these threats and ensure the safety of its personnel and allies in the region.
