Pentagon Identifies 3 US Soldiers Killed in Jordan Drone Attack

01:49 30.01.2024

In a tragic turn of events, three US troops were killed in a drone attack on an American base in Jordan. The Pentagon has identified the fallen soldiers as Sgt William Jerome Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Spc Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia, and Spc Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia. These soldiers were part of the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, 926th Engineer Brigade in Fort Moore, Georgia.

The attack left over 40 individuals wounded, with injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to traumatic brain injuries. Most of the wounded were evacuated for medical treatment, and one soldier remains in critical but stable condition. The severity of the attack has raised concerns and questions about the security measures in place at the base.

Startling revelations have emerged, pointing to a possible mix-up that allowed the enemy drone to pass through the base's defenses. It is believed that the attacking drone may have been mistaken for an American unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) returning to the base. As the enemy drone flew in at a low altitude, the US UAV was making its way back to the small desert installation known as Tower 22, located near the Syria border in northeastern Jordan. This confusion may have led to the attacking drone being allowed to pass without being shot down.

The base, initially a Jordanian outpost monitoring the border, saw an increased US presence after American forces entered Syria in 2015. Currently, it houses approximately 350 US army and air force personnel responsible for engineering, aviation, logistics, and security operations. The attack has raised concerns about the vulnerability of US troops stationed in the region and the need for enhanced security measures.

The Biden administration has attributed the attack to Iranian-backed proxies, further escalating tensions in the already volatile Middle East. President Joe Biden, while vowing retaliation, emphasized that the US is not seeking war with Iran. In response to the attack, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated, "The president and I will not tolerate attacks on US forces, and we will take all necessary actions to defend the US and our troops."

The Pentagon has indicated that the drone strike bears the hallmarks of Kata'ib Hezbollah, an elite Iraqi armed faction closely aligned with Iran. This group emerged in the aftermath of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq and has been involved in various attacks against US forces in the region.

As the Biden administration grapples with the aftermath of this attack, it also faces the challenge of preventing the Israel-Hamas conflict from escalating into a broader regional war. President Biden recently convened a meeting with his national security team in the White House Situation Room to discuss the evolving situation.

The attack on US troops in Jordan serves as a stark reminder of the complex dynamics at play in the Middle East and the constant threat faced by American forces stationed in the region. The incident underscores the need for robust security protocols and heightened vigilance to ensure the safety of US military personnel deployed abroad.
