FBI Informant Accused of Lying About Bidens' Ukrainian Business Ties

21:25 15.02.2024

In a shocking turn of events, an FBI informant has been charged with fabricating a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and a Ukrainian energy company. This claim has been at the center of the Republican impeachment inquiry in Congress, causing significant controversy and political turmoil.

According to prosecutors, Alexander Smirnov falsely reported to the FBI in June 2020 that executives associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma had paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. Smirnov allegedly told his handler that an executive from the company had hired Hunter Biden to "protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems." These allegations were based on false information and personal biases against Joe Biden, as Smirnov had only routine business dealings with the company in 2017.

The 43-year-old informant, Smirnov, appeared in court briefly in Las Vegas after being charged with making a false statement and creating a false and fictitious record. He did not enter a plea, and the judge ordered a closed hearing to discuss sealing court documents. Federal public defender Margaret Wightman Lambrose, who represents Smirnov, declined to comment on the case.

The informant's claims have played a significant role in the Republican effort to investigate President Joe Biden and his family, ultimately leading to a House impeachment inquiry against him. However, this recent revelation casts serious doubt on the credibility of these allegations. Hunter Biden's attorney, who is expected to give a deposition later this month, argues that these charges demonstrate that the probe is "based on dishonest, uncredible allegations and witnesses."

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, has called for an immediate end to the Biden impeachment inquiry. Raskin strongly believes that the allegations brought forth by Republicans against Biden have always been "a tissue of lies built on conspiracy theories." He urges Speaker Mike Johnson, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, and House Republicans to abandon their pursuit of impeachment and put an end to what he calls "nonsense."

This shocking development has not only raised serious questions about the validity of the Republican impeachment inquiry but has also ignited a fierce debate over the role of misinformation and biased sources in shaping political investigations. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how this revelation will impact the ongoing impeachment proceedings and the overall political landscape surrounding President Joe Biden and his family.
