Double Fatal Shooting at University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Dorm Room

17:08 16.02.2024

Two people were found dead with gunshot wounds inside a dorm on the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs campus on Friday morning. The incident led to the campus going into lockdown and dormitory residents being ordered to shelter-in-place. The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating the deaths as a homicide, and they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.

The shooting was first reported to campus police just before 6 a.m., and they immediately responded to the scene. The bodies of the two victims were discovered in a dorm room, each with one gunshot wound. Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation and are working to determine what happened and notify the next of kin. The official cause of death will be determined by the coroner's office in the coming days.

Students on campus were shocked by the incident. One student, Adam Trujillo, received an email from his teacher alerting him to the lockdown and urging him to stay safe. When he went outside, he was met with a large police presence and news reporters. The campus police and the Colorado Springs Police Department clarified that the shooting was not an active shooter situation but still ordered a lockdown and shelter-in-place for several hours.

The lockdown was eventually lifted, and students were allowed to leave campus, except for those residing in Alpine Village, a residence hall for sophomore through graduate school students. The shelter-in-place order for Alpine Village was due to an ongoing investigation, according to campus police. The campus was fully reopened later in the morning, but individuals were asked to refrain from returning until instructed to do so.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his concern and offered state support in a statement. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs campus is located in northeast Colorado Springs and is one of four universities in the University of Colorado system.

As of now, the identities of the victims, suspects, and motive remain unknown. The Colorado Springs Police Department is actively investigating the incident as a homicide and will release more information when appropriate. The campus was closed for the day in response to the shooting, with classes canceled. The university has over 11,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and staff.
