Ex-funeral home owner accused of keeping body in hearse for two years

08:53 17.02.2024

A former funeral service operator in Denver, Colorado, is facing multiple charges after a woman's corpse and the cremated remains of at least 30 people were found at a home last week. Miles Harford, 33, operated Apollo Funeral and Cremation Services in Littleton from 2012 until 2022. The owners of the house discovered several boxes containing cremated human remains while removing their tenant's belongings on February 6. The Denver Sheriff Department had served an eviction order at the address, and a deputy was present when the homeowners found the remains in the crawl space. Investigators from the Denver Police Department and the medical examiner's office responded to the home to examine and recover the remains.

Harford, who is cooperating with the investigation, acknowledged that he could not find a crematory to process the woman's body, leading him to store it in an inoperable hearse in the backyard of the home. The body of a 63-year-old woman who died in August 2022 was discovered in the hearse, covered with a blanket. The woman's family had been given someone else's remains, which they believed to be hers. Authorities have established a hotline for concerned families affected by the discovery.

Harford is expected to be charged with abuse of a corpse, forgery of a public document, and theft. Denver District Attorney Beth McCann stated that further charges could be added as the investigation continues. This case adds to a string of horrific incidents involving mishandled bodies by funeral home operators in Colorado. The state has some of the weakest oversight of the funeral industry in the nation, with no routine inspections of funeral homes or qualification requirements for operators. Harford's former employer sought a court order to keep him away from her over alleged harassment last year, indicating a history of financial trouble and legal issues. Police are working to facilitate his arrest as they continue to support the families impacted by this disturbing discovery.
