University of Florida cuts DEI staff to comply with state law

17:59 02.03.2024

The University of Florida has made a significant move to comply with a new state regulation by eliminating all diversity, equity, and inclusion positions, as well as closing the Office of the Chief Diversity Officer, according to an administrative memo from the university. The memo, signed by Provost J. Scott Angle and two vice presidents, stated that the $5 million previously allocated for DEI initiatives will now be placed into a retirement fund for faculty. This decision comes after the Florida Board of Governors issued regulation 9.016, which prohibits the use of state funds for DEI programs, as well as for "political or social activism."

Governor Ron DeSantis applauded the move on social media, calling DEI toxic and stating that it has no place in public universities. The governor has been a vocal critic of DEI programs, previously banning classes that focus on people of color and the LGBTQ+ community in Florida schools. The university's decision to eliminate DEI positions and contracts with outside vendors has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that it is a step backward in promoting diversity and inclusion on college campuses.

In response to the cuts, the University of Florida has assured employees whose positions were eliminated will receive 12 weeks of pay and encouraged them to apply for other available positions within the university. Critics of the move, including Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford, have condemned the decision as intolerant and out of step with the values expected of a public institution of higher education. The debate over DEI initiatives in higher education continues to be a contentious issue, with proponents advocating for progress toward diversity and inclusivity, while opponents argue against what they see as discriminatory practices.
