Trump posts $91 million bond for E. Jean Carroll defamation appeal

14:58 08.03.2024

Former President Donald Trump has secured a $91.6 million bond to cover the money he owes to writer E. Jean Carroll in a defamation lawsuit while he appeals the jury's verdict. Trump's attorney, Alina Habba, filed papers with the New York judge to show that the bond was secured from the Federal Insurance Co., a unit of the insurance giant Chubb. The bond would cover the $83.3 million judgment in the lawsuit, plus interest. This move comes after Judge Lewis A. Kaplan refused to delay the deadline for posting a bond, putting pressure on Trump to either pay up or secure the necessary funds.

The defamation case stems from allegations made by Carroll that Trump sexually abused her in 1996, which he vehemently denies. The jury awarded Carroll $5 million for the alleged sexual assault and for damage to her reputation when Trump publicly stated that she made up the attack to help sell a memoir. A second trial in January determined how much more Trump might owe Carroll for derogatory comments he made about her in 2019 while he was president.

In addition to the defamation case, Trump also faces a judgment of more than $450 million in a civil fraud lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The judge in that case found that Trump fraudulently inflated his net worth to obtain favorable loan terms and other financial benefits. Trump recently asked for a bond of only $100 million in that case, but a single appeals court judge rejected the request.

Despite Trump's claims of a net worth in the billions, he may need to sell some properties to cover the penalties he faces. A recent analysis found that he has over $350 million in cash and investments that he can sell quickly, but that may not be enough to cover what he owes in the fraud and defamation cases. The situation continues to develop as Trump navigates the legal challenges and financial pressures he currently faces.
