Apple Reverses Course and Allows Epic Games to Start Competing App Store

16:21 08.03.2024

Apple has restored Epic Games' permissions to offer its own app store to iPhone customers in Europe, following a swift inquiry by European Union regulators. This decision came just one day after the EU suggested that Apple's move to block Epic may have violated the new Digital Markets Act, which took effect this week. The law places restrictions on gatekeeper Big Tech firms, requiring them to allow developers to run their own app stores. Epic Games, which has been in a legal battle with Apple over its App Store policies, said it would move forward with its plans to offer Fortnite and its Epic Games Store. Apple, after initially terminating Epic's account in response to CEO Tim Sweeney's public criticism, has now permitted Epic Sweden AB to re-sign the developer agreement and be accepted into the Apple Developer Program. This change of heart came after the European Commission requested further explanations from Apple under the DMA. EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager snarkily commented that gamers will soon be able to play Fortnite on iOS once again. Apple, which had previously maintained that it had the sole discretion to terminate deals with developers, stated that Epic had committed to following the rules, including the DMA policies. Epic had accused Apple of violating the DMA by blocking its attempt to set up a competing app store in Europe. The reversal by Apple highlights the company's efforts to comply with the new European tech competition law, which aims to increase competition and potentially lower prices for smartphone users. The feud between Apple and Epic dates back to 2020 when Epic broke the App Store's rules, leading to its removal from the platform and subsequent legal battles. With Apple now allowing Epic to proceed with its plans, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the ongoing dispute between the two tech giants.
