Rust armorer found guilty in fatal shooting trial

14:56 09.03.2024

A New Mexico jury found movie weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust where actor Alec Baldwin was involved. Gutierrez-Reed, who was also in charge of weapons on the set, was convicted after just over two hours of deliberation. The 26-year-old was acquitted of evidence tampering but now faces up to 18 months in prison. The trial focused on whether Gutierrez-Reed's negligence and lack of thorough safety checks led to the tragic incident. Witnesses testified that live rounds were unknowingly mixed in with dummy rounds on the set, leading to the fatal shooting. Gutierrez-Reed's attorney argued that she was not aware of the live rounds and blamed a props supplier for the mistake. The judge remanded Gutierrez-Reed in custody pending her sentencing, which is expected to take place next month. The conviction comes as a precursor to Alec Baldwin's upcoming trial in July, where he faces charges of involuntary manslaughter for his role in the shooting. The verdict has brought new accountability to the tragic incident that resulted in the death of Halyna Hutchins and the injury of director Joel Souza.
