Chaos in Haiti prompts urgent meeting with Caribbean leaders and US deployment

09:59 13.03.2024

The Caribbean leaders have called for an emergency meeting to address the escalating gang violence in Haiti, particularly in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The United States military has flown in forces to enhance security at the US Embassy in Haiti and evacuate nonessential personnel. The situation in Haiti has become so dire that gangs have attacked police stations, closed international airports, and raided the country's largest prisons, releasing over 4,000 inmates. The ongoing violence has left more than 15,000 people homeless and has caused a shortage of basic necessities like food and water.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to meet with Caribbean leaders in Jamaica on Monday to discuss the crisis in Haiti and the pressure mounting on Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign. Caricom, a regional trade bloc, has been working for months to establish a transitional government in Haiti, but the situation on the ground remains dire. The ongoing gang attacks have paralyzed the country, leading to a state of emergency and nightly curfew extensions.

Police and palace guards in Port-au-Prince are working to regain control of the streets after gangs launched massive attacks on police stations. Many Haitians have sought refuge in government buildings, complicating efforts to secure key institutions. The situation in Haiti continues to deteriorate, prompting urgent calls for a peacekeeping force to restore order and stability.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has faced calls for his resignation, remains unable to return to Haiti after being denied entry into the Dominican Republic. The Dominican government has cited security concerns and the need to safeguard its national stability as reasons for not allowing Henry to enter the country. As the violence in Haiti escalates and the political crisis deepens, regional leaders and the international community are working to find a solution to the ongoing turmoil in the country.
