Paul Alexander, a North Texas man who spent most of his life in an iron lung after surviving polio in the 1950s, has passed away at the age of 78. Known as "Polio Paul," Alexander defied expectations and became a successful lawyer, author, and inspirational figure. He was the first person to graduate from high school in Dallas without ever attending class in person, and later went on to graduate from Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas Law School. In 2020, he published his memoir, "Three Minutes for a Dog: My Life in an Iron Lung," which he wrote using a pen attached to a stick held in his mouth. Alexander's story of perseverance and determination resonated with people around the world.

In March of last year, Alexander was briefly hospitalized after contracting COVID-19, but was later released. His social media manager, Christopher Ulmer, created a GoFundMe page to help cover Alexander's medical expenses and care. The fundraiser was a success, allowing Alexander to live his last few years stress-free and ensuring that his funeral expenses would be covered.

Despite spending decades confined to the iron lung, Alexander never let his disability define him. He inspired others with his story of overcoming challenges and achieving his dreams. In a video interview with YouTuber Mitch Summers, Alexander emphasized the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. His positive attitude and resilience made him a role model for many.

Alexander's passing marks the end of an era for iron lung patients in the United States, as he was one of only a few remaining individuals still using the outdated medical device. His legacy will live on through his memoir, his inspirational story, and the impact he had on those who knew him. Paul Alexander may have been confined to an iron lung for most of his life, but his spirit and determination knew no bounds.
