Afghan refugee found guilty of murdering Muslim men in Albuquerque

08:58 19.03.2024

Muhammad Syed, an Afghan refugee, was convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of 41-year-old Aftab Hussein, one of the three ambush-style shootings that took place over a few weeks in July and August 2022. During the weeklong trial, prosecutors presented evidence including cellphone records showing Syed was in the area at the time of the shooting, ballistics analysis confirming the murder weapon was found under his bed, and a note in his phone referencing testing the rifle on the date of the killing. Despite the conviction, prosecutors were unable to determine a motive for the killings, describing them as "willful and very deliberate" actions. Syed's defense attorneys argued that there was no evidence directly linking him to the shootings and said other residents in his home could have accessed the weapon and his phone. The defense plans to appeal the conviction once the other trials are completed. In addition to Hussein, Syed is also accused of killing 27-year-old Muhammad Afzaal Hussain and 25-year-old Naeem Hussain. The motive behind the killings remains unknown, leaving the victims' families and the community still searching for answers. Syed, who has a violent history, settled in the U.S. several years before the attacks and is also considered a suspect in a fourth murder in 2021. Despite the lack of a clear motive, prosecutors believe the killings were deliberate and premeditated, leading to the conviction of Syed for one of the murders.
