Idaho manhunt ends with capture of escaped inmate and suspected shooter

05:39 22.03.2024

Authorities in Idaho have apprehended Skylar Meade, a white supremacist prisoner who escaped from custody with the help of 28-year-old Nicholas Umphenour, his alleged accomplice. The two men were arrested in Twin Falls after a brief car chase, following a violent breakout at a Boise hospital. Meade, who had been serving a 20-year sentence for shooting at a sheriff's sergeant during a chase, was taken to the hospital after injuring himself. However, during his transfer back to prison, Umphenour ambushed corrections officers, shooting two of them. The pair then fled the scene, sparking a manhunt that led to their capture. Investigators are now looking into two homicides in Nez Perce County and Clearwater County, where both victims were men. Handcuffs believed to have been worn by Meade during his escape were found at one of the crime scenes, raising suspicions of their involvement. Both men are members of the Aryan Knights gang and had been housed together in prison at times. The Aryan Knights, a white supremacist gang within the Idaho prison system, was formed in the mid-1990s and has over 100 members both inside and outside of prisons. The Corrections Department is reviewing its policies in light of the escape, with director Josh Tewalt emphasizing that the incident was a planned event, not an accident. The injured corrections officers are currently in stable condition, with one already released from the hospital. The investigation into the escape and the related homicides is ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the events leading up to the violent breakout.
