Tragic discovery: Riley Strain's body recovered from Nashville river

12:04 22.03.2024

The body of 22-year-old University of Missouri student Riley Strain, who went missing after being kicked out of Luke's 32 Bridge in downtown Nashville on March 8, has been found in the Cumberland River. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department announced the discovery on Friday morning, approximately 8 miles from downtown. The police received a call from a nearby business worker who discovered Strain's body after removing an object from the river. The city fire department removed the body from the water, and the medical examiner's office confirmed the identity. Strain still had his shirt and other identified objects on his body. Police Chief John Drake expressed his condolences to Strain's family and thanked the community for their support. Given Strain's height and weight, police were expecting his body to surface between 14 and 20 days if it was in the Cumberland River, and this was the 14th day. Strain's friends and family had been unable to reach him after he was escorted out of the bar, and police searches had been unsuccessful. The investigation did not uncover any evidence of foul play. An autopsy is pending. The Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission announced it was going to investigate claims that Strain was overserved at the bar. The bar's records show he ordered one alcoholic drink and two waters before being asked to leave. Security footage showed Strain stumbling and falling at times after leaving the bar. His last sighting was at 9:52 p.m. on Gay Street. Strain's debit card was found near the river, and investigators had been focusing on area waterways in their search efforts. Strain's parents drove from Springfield, Missouri, to Nashville after learning of his disappearance. His mother, Michelle Whiteid, expressed her devastation and desire to find her son. Police had been using boats with sonar capabilities and drones to search for Strain in the Cumberland River. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as the story develops.
