A 4.7 magnitude earthquake centered near Lebanon, New Jersey, shook the densely populated New York City metropolitan area on Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey. Residents reported feeling rumbling across the eastern seaboard, with reports of trembles being felt in neighbouring states of Connecticut and Massachusetts, as well as in cities from Philadelphia to Boston.
The quake, initially reported as a 4.8 magnitude event, hit around 10:30 a.m. with buildings rattling across parts of the Northeast. The New York Police Department and Fire Department reported no damages or injuries, but said they were responding to calls and evaluating structural stability. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Lebanon, N.J., about 50 miles west of Manhattan.
