Vandals sought for destroying ancient rock formations at Lake Mead

12:27 15.04.2024

Video footage captured at Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada has shocked officials and visitors alike as it shows two individuals destroying ancient rock formations. The video, which was sent to the National Park Service, shows two people scaling the russet-colored rock formations along the park's Redstone Dune Trail. As they climb, they push large chunks of loose rock to the ground, causing irreversible damage to the ancient formations. A young girl can be heard screaming as the rocks crumble to dust.

John Haynes, a spokesperson for the recreation area, expressed his disbelief at the destruction, stating, "Why on earth would you do this to this area that's so beautiful? It's one of my favorite places in the park and they're up there just destroying it." The park officials are now trying to identify the two individuals seen in the video, as such vandalism at federally protected sites can result in felony charges, fines, and potential jail time.

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which spans 1.5 million acres of breathtaking mountain views and canyon trails, sees around six million visitors each year. Due to the vast size of the park, staff cannot be present everywhere at once, leading officials to rely on visitors to help monitor the area. Visitors are encouraged to report any unusual activity and take videos or photos if they witness vandalism or suspicious behavior.

Authorities are asking for the public's help in tracking down the two men responsible for the destruction at Lake Mead. The National Park Service operates a tip line for reporting such incidents, and officials urge anyone with information to come forward. The damage caused by the individuals is not only devastating to the ancient rock formations but also sets a dangerous precedent for the protection of federally protected sites across the West.
