Tragic Death of Beloved Ostrich at Kansas Zoo Due to Swallowing Keys

02:19 23.04.2024

A beloved ostrich named Karen has tragically passed away at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas after swallowing a staff member's keys. The 5-year-old ostrich had been a resident at the zoo since March 2023 and was known for her playful antics, such as swimming in the pool and being the "dancing queen." The zoo announced the devastating news on social media, stating that despite efforts from experts across the U.S. to save Karen through surgical and non-surgical means, they were unsuccessful. Karen was euthanized on Thursday and "passed away in staff's hands," according to Topeka Zoo Interim Director Fawn Moser.

The zoo has launched an investigation into the incident and is taking appropriate actions regarding the team member involved. Additionally, the zoo will be reviewing and enhancing safety protocols for its animals to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Ostriches, known for their impressive speeds and ability to deliver fatal kicks to predators, can live up to 40 years in the wild and longer in captivity.

The loss of Karen has left the zoo community devastated, with both guests and staff forming deep connections with the vibrant ostrich. The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center, home to over 300 animals on 35 acres, is visited by approximately 250,000 guests annually. Jordan Freiman, an editor and writer for CBSNews.com, reported on the tragic incident, highlighting the impact of Karen's passing on the zoo and its visitors.
