Rescue efforts underway for Douglas DC-4 plane crash in Alaska

16:49 23.04.2024

A Douglas DC-4 airplane carrying two people crashed Tuesday in the Alaska city of Fairbanks, authorities said. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the Douglas C-54, a model similar to the DC-4, went down southwest of Fairbanks International Airport around 10 a.m. local time. The crash occurred in the area of the Tanana River, according to Alaska State Troopers.

It was not immediately clear how many passengers were onboard the aircraft at the time of the crash. The Douglas DC-4, which was first manufactured during World War II, was known to have a standard passenger seating of 44, although many have since been converted to freighters. The Aviation Safety Network noted that the DC-4 could carry several dozen passengers.

Fairbanks International Airport confirmed that they were cooperating with law enforcement in response to the crash, which took place near Kallenberg Road, approximately 15 miles southwest of the airport. Multiple agencies were on the scene, and the public was advised to avoid the area as investigations by the FAA and NTSB were ongoing.

The Douglas DC-4 was a military aircraft that saw extensive use during World War II and the Berlin Airlift of 1948 to 1949. While there are few DC-4s still in service today, Alaska Air Fuel reportedly operates two of them out of Palmer, Alaska. However, a spokesperson for the company stated they were unaware of any crash involving their aircraft.

Rescue crews were responding to the scene of the crash as the situation continued to develop. Stay tuned for further updates on this tragic incident.
