New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne Jr. Dies at 65

17:36 24.04.2024

Representative Donald M. Payne Jr., a prominent Democrat from Newark, New Jersey, has passed away at the age of 65. He had been hospitalized since April 6 after suffering a heart attack due to complications from diabetes. Governor Phil Murphy confirmed his death, praising Payne as a dedicated public servant with a big heart and tenacious spirit.

Donald Payne Jr. succeeded his father, Donald Payne Sr., in Congress in 2012, following his father's death. The elder Payne had been the first Black member of New Jersey's congressional delegation. Payne Jr. was known for his advocacy on various issues, including securing federal funding for the Gateway tunnel project and supporting lead testing in school water systems.

In addition to his work on transportation and infrastructure, Payne was also recognized for his efforts to improve emergency responses to natural disasters and his proposal for a neighborhood gun buyback program. He served as chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, as well as the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.

Tributes have poured in for Payne, with House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressing their condolences. Payne, who was running for reelection in the 10th Congressional District, leaves behind his wife and three children. His unexpected passing has left a void in the political landscape of New Jersey, as he was hailed as a progressive leader and a champion for the people.
