Handcuffed man's death in Ohio police custody captured on bodycam video

05:30 26.04.2024

An Ohio man, Frank Tyson, died in police custody after being handcuffed and left facedown on the floor of a social club in Canton. The incident, which occurred on April 18, was captured on police body-camera footage that was released on Wednesday. The footage shows officers responding to a report of a crash and finding Tyson by the bar in an AMVETS post. Tyson, a 53-year-old East Canton resident, resisted being handcuffed and repeatedly told officers, "They're trying to kill me" and "Call the sheriff." Despite Tyson saying, "I can't breathe," officers restrained him and told him to calm down. Tyson, who was Black, remained facedown on the floor for over five minutes before officers realized he was in a medical crisis. CPR was performed, and doses of Narcan were administered before Tyson was pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour later.

The Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident. The Canton Police Department has released the body camera footage and recordings from two 911 calls related to the incident. Officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch, who responded to the call, have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. The department has expressed condolences to Tyson's family and stated that they will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

The use of force and the handling of Tyson's medical crisis have raised questions about police procedures and the treatment of individuals in custody. The Department of Justice has long warned against positioning individuals facedown after being handcuffed due to the risk of positional asphyxia. The incident involving Tyson is reminiscent of the events leading to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. The investigation into Tyson's death is ongoing, and the community is seeking transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
