"Hollywood Actors Union Prepares for Strike Vote"

20:10 14.07.2023

The possibility of a simultaneous strike by Hollywood writers and actors has increased after the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) recommended strike action. The union, which represents 160,000 actors, announced that its negotiating committee had voted unanimously to recommend a strike after labor talks with Hollywood studios failed to yield an agreement. The national board of SAG-AFTRA will vote on the strike order on Thursday morning. If approved, this would mark the first dual work stoppage in the industry in over 60 years. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since early May, causing disruptions in late-night television talk shows, production for the fall TV season, and work on big-budget movies. The actors" strike would further force U.S.-based productions from Hollywood studios to shut down, putting additional pressure on media companies to find a resolution. Both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are demanding increases in base pay and residuals in the streaming TV era, as well as assurances that their work will not be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI). Fran Drescher, former star of The Nanny and the president of SAG-AFTRA, expressed disappointment with the studios" responses, calling them "insulting and disrespectful." She stated that negotiations cannot proceed until the companies engage in good faith. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which negotiates on behalf of major companies such as Netflix and Walt Disney, expressed deep disappointment at SAG-AFTRA"s decision to walk away from negotiations. The AMPTP claimed to have offered "historic pay and residual increases" and a groundbreaking AI proposal to protect actors" digital likenesses. They criticized SAG-AFTRA for putting the industry and thousands of livelihoods at risk by choosing to strike instead of negotiating further. The national board"s vote on Thursday will determine whether actors join the ongoing writers" strike, escalating the labor disputes in the entertainment industry.
